Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac surgery is the specialty dedicated to the surgical treatment of heart diseases, lungs and other organs, tissues and blood vessels of the thoracic cavity, including the diaphragm. Coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, heart failure and diseases of the pericardium and large vessels form the repertoire of the cardiac surgeon.

The Center offers minimally invasive alternatives in the area of arterial pathology and venous disease: from sclerotherapy to less invasive surgical therapy with radiofrequency, glue or foam.

Heart Failure

Clinical syndrome in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's metabolic needs. Symptoms include: tiredness; shortness of breath; edema and palpitations along with other signs such as pulmonary congestion and increased abdominal volume. These signs may be difficult to identify in obese, elderly and patients with chronic lung disease.

Cardio-Oncology

A new subspecialty of Cardiology, aimed at the detection, monitoring and treatment of cardiovascular disease in cancer patients. Pre-existing cardiovascular diseases, but also those resulting from cancer therapy (cardiotoxicity) need timely identification and differential treatment.

Cardiomyopathies

Diseases that affect the heart muscle (myocardium). They can arise at any age as a cause of hereditary or acquired familial disease; its severity is variable. Although a significant proportion of affected individuals remain asymptomatic or exhibit only mild symptoms, a subgroup shows angina (chest pain), loss of consciousness, progression to heart failure (symptoms of tiredness and breathing difficulty) or develop cardiac arrhythmias.

Particular focus in the area of stress echocardiography with emphasis on exercise stress echocardiography. As it uses no radiation, its recommended by the European Society of Cardiology as the first-line diagnostic study in cardiac patients.

Consultant Cardiologist, specializing in Exercise Stress Echocardiography, noncoronary heart disease and adult and pediatric sports cardiology including high performance athletes.


Cardiac Imaging Unit

The use of new imaging technologies to perform diagnoses now allows for high-quality exams, with less variability, progressing more and more towards precision medicine. It encompasses groups of patients not eligible for magnetic resonance imaging, as it allows the exam to be performed without the need for apnea, a critical factor for many patients with heart disease.

Explains, diagnoses and treats the electrical activities of the heart. Equipment and techniques for conducting an invasive electrophysiological evaluation of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. The detailed knowledge of the mechanism of arrhythmia allows, on many occasions, the definitive cure of this pathology.
